Study Abroad in German: Scholarships in German for Nepalese students

While tuition fees in colleges in the US and other countries can often be mindboggling, German universities provide courses free of cost, owing to the fact that these universities are state-funded. Students need only bear their living expenses—the rest is taken care of.

Every year, hoards of Nepali students are found jetting off to foreign countries for education and work. While the US and Australia are probably the most popular destinations at present, we should keep our minds open to other possible alternatives. Germany, for instance, is a viable option, and the number of students applying to this European nation has grown over time, as demonstrated by the proliferation of consultancies in Kathmandu that help students to get into German educational institutions.

One of the most unique aspects of the education system in Germany is the fact that courses are free. Yes, that’s right, free. While tuition fees in colleges in the US and other countries can often be mindboggling, German universities provide courses free of cost, owing to the fact that these universities are state-funded. Students need only bear their living expenses—the rest is taken care of. Of course, there are some universities that do charge certain fees per semester, but this is limited to a couple of hundred Euros, nothing extravagant. Besides, considering students are allowed to work 90 days a year means that they have ample opportunity to earn some extra cash while they study.

It’s a fact that German universities—of which there are more than 380—are internationally renowned, made famous by their association with scholars such as Humboldt, Einstein, Hegel and Marx. What’s more, they have now introduced Bachelor and Masters degree programs adapted to international standards and credit systems, thereby reducing the entry barriers for international students.

As for post-graduation job opportunities, many of my own acquaintances have found employment following the end of their academic pursuits. It helps that there is often close cooperation between the universities and industries, as well as research organisations, a link that helps students gain insight into the world they will one day be working in. International students are generally given an additional year after their graduation to stay in the country, during which they need to be gainfully employed. This will also greatly boost their chances of getting a permanent residence permit in the future.

International students coming to Germany are usually put off by the fact that they have to learn the language, but for me, it was more of an added bonus rather than an obstacle. I got to learn a language, and honestly, it’s not that difficult, particularly if you’re a fluent English speaker. In practice, it takes about six months to one year to learn the language to the point where you are able to keep up with your university course. There are some German universities that have begun international courses in Management, Engineering and Social Science in English but besides theses, most faculties are run in German.

Besides the academic opportunities, which I found to be plentiful, Germany was overall a lovely place to live in. With well-developed infrastructure, beautiful cities, and a level of perceived safety—at least where I was living—makes it a place I relive fondly in my memories.

Instead of the predictable circuit of countries, Nepali students need to broaden their horizons. Just because it might be intimidating to have to learn a new language doesn’t mean that places like Germany are impossible to live in, it just makes the experience more rewarding. For me, the ten years I spent there was probably the most intellectually-stimulating length of time I’ve ever had the fortune of passing anywhere, and would sincerely recommend Germany to anyone considering going abroad for their studies.

Admissions in medical schools in state of limbo

Enrollment process for fresh batch of students at several medical colleges has been halted after the Ministry of Health and Population interfered in Nepal Medical Council’s decision of allocating additional MBBS seats for the next academic session.

The MoHP directed NMC, the only medical education regulatory body, to instruct all the medical colleges in the country not to proceed with fresh enrollment of students for MBBS and BDS courses. “The Ministry in its letter issued on Thursday has told the NMC not to implement its decision of allocating additional seats for MBBS until further notice,” a NMC member said.

NMC had stayed put in number of BDS seats but revised MBBS seats for different medical colleges last week. “The ministry halted admission process after receiving complaints against NMC over its alleged irregularities in allocation of MBBS quotas,” an official at the ministry said.

Earlier, boards of the Institute of Medicine and NMC had jointly fixed MBBS and BDS seats for Tribhuvan University affiliated colleges after monitoring all medical colleges. However, NMC increased MBBS intake of Nepali Sena Swasthya Bigyan Sansthan run by the Nepali Army at Sano Bharyang, Kathmandu from 100 to 150 seats and Lalitpur-based KIST Medical College from 75 to 135 students for new academic session.

Similarly, Bhairahawa-based Universal College of Medical Sciences was given 135 seats slashing its earlier intake of 150 students while Chitwan Medical Colleges was allocated 140 seats, 10 seats lower than previous session. However, 70 seats alloted to Pokhara-based Gandaki Medical College Teaching Hospital & Research Pvt Ltd was not altered.

“We have not received official letter from NMC regarding the matter yet. Once we receive the letter, we will move forward accordingly,” informed Dr Rishikesh Narayan Shrestha, Director, KIST Medical College.

There are 18 medical colleges across the country offering MBBS and BDS courses.

Below you will find the general requirements to previous education. These are minimum requirements determined by NOKUT. Please note that institutions may have higher and/or additional requirements for all or some programs.

Which is Better, the IELTS or the TOEFL Test?

The IELTS is often considered to be the only test that can compete with the TOEFL test in the United States.

Peterson's Staff
For many years, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) was the exam most U.S. colleges and universities relied on to measure and test English language skills exhibited by applicants from non-English speaking countries. Worldwide, that was not the case. Another test, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), was the exam required by most other English-speaking countries, including Britain and Australia, to test English language skills. The IELTS is often considered to be the only test that can compete with the TOEFL test in the United States.

The TOEFL test did not match the IELTS in all areas
With its live, one-on-one component, the IELTS has been viewed by many as a superior exam for evaluating the spoken English skills of potential students. Until recently, the TOEFL had no such component and many of the countries requiring the IELTS felt that a speech component to an English proficiency exam was crucial.

Whether or not the IELTS is a better exam really seems to be a matter of opinion. However, its acceptance as an assessment tool has grown in the United States in recent years. In addition to the TOEFL, more than 3,000 U.S. institutions and programs now accept the IELTS as well. You can see a list of these institutions and programs, the IELTS Recognition List, at http://ielts.org/usa.aspx. For the most part, the choice of which test to take is up to you.

The TOEFL iBT is playing catch up
So, which test is better? It depends on who you ask! Some schools remain firmly devoted to the IELTS and its interactive, personalized-speech format. On the other hand, the TOEFL gained some ground globally when it introduced its Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT) format with its new recorded-speech portion. With both tests now offering the ability to test spoken language, and the TOEFL spreading its Internet-based testing ability across the globe, the TOEFL has seen upward spikes in number of users in various parts of the world.

Do you need to prepare for the IELTS or the TOEFL test?
Internet-based testing is just getting started for the IELTS. The current IELTS format is expected to stay around for at least a few more years and, worldwide, many test-prep and coaching companies prepare students for the IELTS. On the other hand, test-prep companies are still a bit stumped by the TOEFL iBT, and preparation lessons and techniques for the iBT are still being developed. Certainly, both tests offer sample materials to potential test-takers, but if you have the choice of preparing for one test or the other with a professional test coach, you may prefer the IELTS, as long as the schools you're applying to will accept it.

Both the TOEFL iBT and the IELTS now evaluate speech
As far as speech evaluation goes, there is no definitive rule on which test is better. Some say the individualized IELTS format is great, while others think there's a potential for bias and an even greater chance of inconsistency in scoring due to individual nuances of the examiners. Critics of the IELTS believe that the panel review of recorded speech for the TOEFL test is a more accurate, less biased mechanism for evaluation.

Which will you take, the IELTS or the TOEFL test?
Ultimately, the test you take will probably be guided by which test is required by the school(s) to which you are applying. If both are acceptable, the availability of testing locations and cost will probably play a significant role in your decision. Both tests have Web sites that can answer many of your questions and that maintain up-to-date news on the progression of their Internet-based test expansions. For most testing dates and locations, you can register online for most testing dates and locations. The Web is also a good access point for sample test materials and testing tips. It is a great place to begin planning your IELTS or TOEFL preparation so that in the end, you earn the best IELTS or TOEFL score you can.

Also, even as you're planning for the IELTS or TOEFL tests, make sure that you prepare for all the parts of the application that will matter, including the admissions essay. For that, there's no better source for help than the essay editing service of EssayEdge, which is staffed by expert Ivy League graduates who can provide you with tips and assistance to perfect your essay. To New Zealand-New Zealand grads are valued the world over

The recent introduction of Post Study Work (PSW) and part-time job facilities by New Zealand authorities have increased the country’s popularity among those seeking foreign degrees.

Nepal and New Zealand have shared a close bond ever since  Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa’s successful 1953 ascent of Everest. New Zealand is a land that welcomes Nepalis, and the country is increasingly becoming a popular education destination for Nepali students.

Qualifications from New Zealand are ranked amongst the best in the world as guarantees of practical and theoretical competency in graduates. The recent introduction of Post Study Work (PSW) and part-time job facilities by New Zealand authorities have increased the country’s popularity among those seeking foreign degrees. The country has eight government-run universities, 18 polytechnic schools and 100 private colleges and is mostly known for the quality of its technical education.

All of these academic institutions are regularly inspected by the Education Review Office (ERO), a government quality assurance agency. Nepali students applying to colleges in New Zealand must have at least a 6.0 IELTS score or a 550 TOEFL score besides having a sound academic background. However, there are many universities which assist students in reaching the required English-language level competency. As in Australia, there is a legal provision in New Zealand to secure students’ investments.

Payments to academic institutions can only be made once a student visa has been confirmed. College tuition for graduate and postgraduate studies range from NZ$ 11,000 to NZ$ 18,000 per year while the annual cost of living has been fixed at NZ $10,000 by The New Zealand High Commission. Mahesh Babu Timilsena, managing  director at Kangaroo Education, says there are numerous options for accommodation—halls of residence, hostels and dormitories (single or double bedrooms) to choose from. “There is also the option of sharing a flat with friends or the ‘home stay’ alternative, both of which will amount to NZ$ 600 per month.” Students can work fulltime on vacations and up to 20 hours per week on college days. The average per hour wage is NZ$ 15. PSW facilities are available to international students for one to two years depending on their graduating courses and education consultants believe all costs of study can be recovered during the PSW period.

Chartered Accountancy: Much more than auditing and accounting

“CA courses provide students with knowledge on a variety of topics like auditing, accounting, taxation, corporate finance as well as management.

SUPRASANNA ARYAL
“The number of students pursuing Chartered Accountancy (CA) courses has increased a lot over the years. This is mainly because the job market has an increasing demand of the expertise that CA courses ensure,” shares Umesh Raj Pandeya, a Chartered Accountant, who also teaches Taxation at Kathmandu Model Center of Professional Education in Hattisar. CA students are preferred in the market compared to other management students, he adds.

He elaborates, “CA courses provide students with knowledge on a variety of topics like auditing, accounting, taxation, corporate finance as well as management.” He further informs that these skills are highly regarded in almost all fields including manufacturing, insurance, investments and policy making.

As informed by Pandeya, students can also study on their own and take the examinations after compiling study materials as per the syllabus prescribed by Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN). However, most students prefer going to coaching classes provided by various institutions so that they can have a general idea of how examinations are taken, he observes.

Mandeep Bashistha, 22, is preparing to complete the final level of his CA course of Nepali Board. There are three levels in the course. “I completed two levels attending CCMA College in Putalisadak. I’m planning to complete the third level on my own,” he says. “The last two levels were pretty tough. Seeking help from the institution was helpful,” he recalls.

Unlike the previous levels, an internship is compulsory for the final level. He has started working with an audit firm where he’s been practicing whatever he studied in the previous years, related with auditing, accounting and taxation. “We also give consultations on various financial matters to different organizations when required,” he shares.

Since this is his first ever professional experience, he’s pretty much satisfied with all the people he gets to meet and everything he gets to learn about. “I’ve been getting the opportunity to meet professionals from different walks of life and learning a lot from them,” he says, adding, “Also, since it’s a paid internship, it feels very good to be financially independent finally.”

Likewise, Shankar Pokharel, 25, is also preparing to complete the final level of his CA course. He completed the previous levels from Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and will be taking the remaining examinations from Nepal.

However, despite the enrollment of a large number of students in the CA course, comparatively only very few students complete the course. Regarding this, Pokharel observes, “Many people feel that CA is a tough course and they quit without completing all the levels. But it isn’t really that difficult if one has the patience and perseverance to do well.” Another reason why many students quit is because they’re already offered high-paying jobs after completing the first levels, he adds.

He says that he has no regret over deciding to pursue CA as the course will ensure financial security in future because there are a wide range of options to choose from when it comes to career.

As shared by Pandeya, in Nepal, ICAN issues Certificate of Practice to the students after they complete the CA course and then they can start practicing. However, those who complete their CA as per India’s or the UK’s education system, they have to study more and appear additional examinations to get the certificate in Nepal, he adds.

Talking about the challenges of studying CA in Nepal, Bashishta observes, “We have faced some problems while finding the relevant study materials. But many new Nepali writers have been coming up with their findings, so the new CA students may not have to face the same difficulties.”

The course requires a lot of hard work and concentration, and students shouldn’t give up so easily, he concludes.

Highly preferred in job market-BIM

BIM plays a major role in bridging the gap between management and IT sectors. Many banks, manufacturing agencies and other corporate houses prefer the graduates of this course these days as they are dynamic in both IT and management

Sushma Shrestha, 21, is currently studying Bachelor’s in Information Management (BIM), at St Xavier’s College in Maitighar. Her interest in Information Technology (IT) as well as management studies made her pursue the four-year course.

“IT is very useful in today’s context and management is equally important. I’m glad I chose a course that features a combination of both the streams,” shares Shrestha, adding that since she aspires to be an entrepreneur and handle own business, excelling in the two faculties simultaneously will prove to be very beneficial.

Likewise, Bharat Khanal, 22, a final year student at Kantipur College of Management and Information Technology (KCMIT) in Mid Baneshwar, says, “What I like the most about BIM is that the course provides an intense knowledge on subjects like networking, database, programming, multimedia and computer architecture along with various management subjects.”He suggests that those students, who, like himself, aspire to become an application developer, can opt for BIM. “The course will not only give ample knowledge on technology related subjects to the students for coming up with programs and software, but also on how to promote the product in the market,” he says. He highlights that BIM will make a student compatible in proper communication and marketing, too.

Regarding the enrollment requirements, Shiva Dangol, the coordinator of National College of Computer Studies (NCCS) in Paknajole, informs, “Students first have to pass the Tribhuvan University’s test called Central Management Admission Test (CMAT). Then the college’s faculty reviews the students’ past academic performances and candidates are selected for interview.”

At NCCS, 60 students are enrolled each year for the course. “The popularity of BIM is increasing tremendously over the years. And due to limited seats in the colleges, there’s a tough competition among the applicants,” he observes.

“The course covers subjects like Sociology, English, Statistics, Mathematics, Business Communication and Economics along with fundamental courses of programming,” shares Sujan Kayastha, Director of Thames International College in Old Baneshwar. Due to the variety in the subjects, undergraduate students get to broaden their horizons, he adds.

“BIM plays a major role in bridging the gap between management and IT sectors. Many banks, manufacturing agencies and other corporate houses prefer the graduates of this course these days as they are dynamic in both IT and management,” Kayastha informs.

Adding to what Kayastha says about BIM’s scope, Dangol highlights, “Since BIM makes students proficient in both management as well as IT, after completing the course, they will be able to compete with Bachelor’s in Business Management (BBA) graduates as well as Bachelor’s in Information Technology (BIT) graduates in the job market.” Students can choose from MBA (Master’s in Business Administration) as well as (Master’s in Information Technology) MIT while pursuing higher studies, he concludes.

The colleges’ admission for BIM will be open after CMAT’s results are published.
