Every year, hoards of Nepali students are found jetting off to foreign countries for education and work. While the US and Australia are probably the most popular destinations at present, we should keep our minds open to other possible alternatives. Germany, for instance, is a viable option, and the number of students applying to this European nation has grown over time, as demonstrated by the proliferation of consultancies in Kathmandu that help students to get into German educational institutions.

One of the most unique aspects of the education system in Germany is the fact that courses are free. Yes, that’s right, free. While tuition fees in colleges in the US and other countries can often be mindboggling, German universities provide courses free of cost, owing to the fact that these universities are state-funded. Students need only bear their living expenses—the rest is taken care of. Of course, there are some universities that do charge certain fees per semester, but this is limited to a couple of hundred Euros, nothing extravagant. Besides, considering students are allowed to work 90 days a year means that they have ample opportunity to earn some extra cash while they study.

It’s a fact that German universities—of which there are more than 380—are internationally renowned, made famous by their association with scholars such as Humboldt, Einstein, Hegel and Marx. What’s more, they have now introduced Bachelor and Masters degree programs adapted to international standards and credit systems, thereby reducing the entry barriers for international students.

As for post-graduation job opportunities, many of my own acquaintances have found employment following the end of their academic pursuits. It helps that there is often close cooperation between the universities and industries, as well as research organisations, a link that helps students gain insight into the world they will one day be working in. International students are generally given an additional year after their graduation to stay in the country, during which they need to be gainfully employed. This will also greatly boost their chances of getting a permanent residence permit in the future.

International students coming to Germany are usually put off by the fact that they have to learn the language, but for me, it was more of an added bonus rather than an obstacle. I got to learn a language, and honestly, it’s not that difficult, particularly if you’re a fluent English speaker. In practice, it takes about six months to one year to learn the language to the point where you are able to keep up with your university course. There are some German universities that have begun international courses in Management, Engineering and Social Science in English but besides theses, most faculties are run in German. 

Besides the academic opportunities, which I found to be plentiful, Germany was overall a lovely place to live in. With well-developed infrastructure, beautiful cities, and a level of perceived safety—at least where I was living—makes it a place I relive fondly in my memories.

Instead of the predictable circuit of countries, Nepali students need to broaden their horizons. Just because it might be intimidating to have to learn a new language doesn’t mean that places like Germany are impossible to live in, it just makes the experience more rewarding. For me, the ten years I spent there was probably the most intellectually-stimulating length of time I’ve ever had the fortune of passing anywhere, and would sincerely recommend Germany to anyone considering going abroad for their studies.

Academic requirements

Undergraduate studies

To New Zealand-New Zealand grads are valued the world over

The recent introduction of Post Study Work (PSW) and part-time job facilities by New Zealand authorities have increased the country’s popularity among those seeking foreign degrees.

Nepal and New Zealand have shared a close bond ever since  Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa’s successful 1953 ascent of Everest. New Zealand is a land that welcomes Nepalis, and the country is increasingly becoming a popular education destination for Nepali students.

Qualifications from New Zealand are ranked amongst the best in the world as guarantees of practical and theoretical competency in graduates. The recent introduction of Post Study Work (PSW) and part-time job facilities by New Zealand authorities have increased the country’s popularity among those seeking foreign degrees. The country has eight government-run universities, 18 polytechnic schools and 100 private colleges and is mostly known for the quality of its technical education. 

All of these academic institutions are regularly inspected by the Education Review Office (ERO), a government quality assurance agency. Nepali students applying to colleges in New Zealand must have at least a 6.0 IELTS score or a 550 TOEFL score besides having a sound academic background. However, there are many universities which assist students in reaching the required English-language level competency. As in Australia, there is a legal provision in New Zealand to secure students’ investments. 

Payments to academic institutions can only be made once a student visa has been confirmed. College tuition for graduate and postgraduate studies range from NZ$ 11,000 to NZ$ 18,000 per year while the annual cost of living has been fixed at NZ $10,000 by The New Zealand High Commission. Mahesh Babu Timilsena, managing  director at Kangaroo Education, says there are numerous options for accommodation—halls of residence, hostels and dormitories (single or double bedrooms) to choose from. “There is also the option of sharing a flat with friends or the ‘home stay’ alternative, both of which will amount to NZ$ 600 per month.” Students can work fulltime on vacations and up to 20 hours per week on college days. The average per hour wage is NZ$ 15. PSW facilities are available to international students for one to two years depending on their graduating courses and education consultants believe all costs of study can be recovered during the PSW period.

Students to raise issues in TU Senate

Major students’ unions today decided to raise several issues — fee hike, Free Students Union polls, affiliations to private colleges, and maintenance of academic calendar, among others — during the meeting of Tribhuvan University Senate to be held on August 15.

A meeting of major students’ unions including Nepal Students Union, All Nepal National Free Students Unions, All Nepal National Independent Students Union-Revolutionary and other student wings affiliated to Madhes-based parties and other political forces decided to take up the issues with TU Senate for further discussion.

Representatives of NSU, ANNFSU and ANNISU-R will represent students in the TU Senate. The meeting has also decided to draw TU’s attention to implementation of agreements TU had reached with students’ unions in the past.

Students failing SLC can sit for CTEVT test

BHAKTAPUR: At a time when technical education has gained in popularity, the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) recently endorsed a provision to allow even School Leaving Certificate (SLC) failed students to sit in the entrance examination to take up such courses for higher education.

CTEVT has offered this golden opportunity to students who have failed in only two subjects and had appeared in the SLC chance exam. Students must pass the chance exam to enroll in certain institutions for studies.

The entrance exam is going to be held on July 25 and 26 while the chance exam is going to be held from August 5.

Dr Ram Hari Lamichhane, member-secretary of CTEVT, informed that they had offered diploma courses in agriculture, animal rearing, construction, health and other technical subjects. He said CTEVT has been planning to keep display bars at various public places which will make the youths aware about skills. He informed that the display bar will be kept at Tribhuvan International Airport, Department of Foreign Employment, Passport Department and Ratnapark. “Such public display will help students, public and others concerned ,” he added.

Currently, around 1,700 youths leave for foreign employment every day. Out of this total, two per cent are skilled, 24 per cent are less skilled and 72 per cent are unskilled. CTEVT has also been planning to introduce a special scholarship programme for unprivileged girls and Dalit and minority community students.

Yesterday, in the budget speech for the new fiscal, the government announced it would be launching technical education in 240 constituencies. It has also allocated budget to construct buildings for 13 poly-technics in various parts of the country to promote technical and vocational education for youths.

Pre-Departure Briefing to Australia

Once you have been accepted to study at an institution and have received confirmation of your student visa, the next step is to start planning for your arrival.

Here is a checklist to help you plan your departure:

Airfares – Make sure you are aware of the date and time of your flight. Keep your flight details in a safe and secure place, with your passport and visa.

Contact details – You may want to have a list of emergency contact details for family, as well as your embassy, accommodation and institution details. If you have used an education agent, keep their contact details on you, in case you need to contact them once you arrive in Australia.

Australian currency – There are money exchange places available at Australian airports and in cities, but it is recommended to have some Australian currency on you prior to leaving your home country.

Transport from the airport – Whether you are taking public transport, a taxi, or you are being picked up from the airport by your education provider, it is important that you have all the details including the time, the route and, if your travel has been arranged by your institution, their contact details. If you need a map to assist you in getting to your accommodation from the airport, they will be available at the airport, or you can print one prior to leaving.

Multimedia is about conveying information effectively and efficiently through the integrated use of different media: text, audio, graphics, animation, video and human-computer interaction. Multimedia techniques have numerous application areas, including entertainment, education, commerce, engineering, medicine and scientific research.

But how do these technologies work? What makes them tick? How are they going to develop in the future? Digital electronic, computing and communications technologies form the tangible products we use, to gather information, record, interpret and store the data to present the finished product. But the creative element is often hidden in the software. The interaction between the hardware and the software is the crucial element defining the way these products will evolve and which will be successful.

MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGY

The Multimedia Technology program starts with the scientific and technical principles of media capture and computer representation, coupled with the methods of operation and application of the computer software and systems that enable delivery of multimedia productions. This central core is complemented with study of a broad range of technologies and processes that support multimedia systems and the delivery of multimedia productions, e.g. computer software design, computer system organization, the Internet, commercial and scientific information management.

Graduates in Multimedia Technology will be ready for a rewarding career as a technical professional adaptable to wide range of opportunities in the design and application of information communication systems based on software technologies.

MULTIMEDIA DIGITAL SYSTEMS

In contrast Multimedia Digital Systems complements study of multimedia principles and software by progressively focusing on the hardware technology and discovering how digital electronic designs allow multimedia products to be delivered. Students will consider the theory and practice of digital electronic systems design and see how this provides audio, video and interactive multimedia environments.
